Brass & Bronze — Material Overview

Brass is copper alloyed with zinc. The 70/30 "cartridge brass" (C26000) offers the best combination of strength and ductility for deep drawing; admiralty and naval brass add tin (and arsenic) for dezincification resistance in condenser and marine service.

Bronzes are copper-tin (phosphor bronze, with excellent spring and bearing properties) and copper-aluminium alloys (aluminium / nickel-aluminium bronze, with high strength plus seawater corrosion and cavitation resistance). Together they cover machined fittings, bearings, bushings, marine hardware, pump and valve components and wear parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dezincification and how do I avoid it?

Dezincification is selective leaching of zinc from brass leaving weak porous copper — a risk in some waters, especially warm and low-flow conditions. Arsenical grades (admiralty C44300, DZR brasses) resist it. In aggressive seawater, copper-nickel or bronze is the safer choice.

Brass or bronze for bearings?

Phosphor bronze (C51000) is the classic bearing and bushing alloy with high fatigue strength and low friction; aluminium bronze takes higher loads and impact. Plain brass is not a bearing material.

Can brass be used in seawater?

Short answer: only the right grades. Naval brass and admiralty brass (tin-bearing) work in condenser and marine duty; general-purpose brasses dezincify. For critical seawater piping, copper-nickel is preferred.

What is the machinability advantage of brass?

Brass (especially leaded free-machining types) machines at high speed with excellent finishes — a major cost saving for volume machined parts. These grades are supplied to the applicable regional compliance requirements; confirm with the enquiry.

Which is stronger — brass or bronze?

Bronzes generally are: nickel-aluminium bronze reaches 620–700 MPa tensile versus about 315–440 MPa for annealed brasses. Brasses can be cold-worked harder, but for cast and high-load parts bronze wins.
