Inconel & Incoloy — Material Overview
Inconel grades are nickel-chromium superalloys: the chromium oxide scale they form at temperature protects against oxidation and carburisation in furnaces and hot gas streams, while solid-solution (600, 601, 625) or precipitation strengthening (718, X-750) carries the load.
Incoloy grades replace part of the nickel with iron — an economical route to high-temperature oxidation and carburisation resistance. 800/800H/800HT serve furnace and steam-hydrocarbon service to about 1100 °C, and 825 adds molybdenum and copper for chemical-corrosion duty including sulphuric and phosphoric acids.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Inconel and Incoloy?
Inconel is a nickel-chromium alloy family (chromium in a nickel base); Incoloy replaces part of the nickel with iron, which lowers cost while keeping high-temperature oxidation resistance. Incoloy 800-family is the classic furnace-grade; Inconel grades lead in strength and the most severe hot-corrosion service.
Which grade for furnace tubing?
Incoloy 800H/800HT is the standard choice for steam reformers and furnace tubing to about 1100 °C with its controlled grain size and creep strength. Inconel 601 is preferred where oxidation cycling is severe.
Why is Inconel 625 so widely used offshore?
It combines high strength with outstanding pitting and crevice resistance (PREN ≈ 51) in seawater and sour gas, resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and welds readily — ideal for subsea and cladding duty.
Can Inconel 718 be welded?
Yes — one of its key advantages over older superalloys is excellent weldability in the aged condition, which is why it dominates fabricated hot-section hardware.
What fillers weld these alloys?
Typical choices: ENiCrFe-3 (82) for 600/601, ENiCrMo-3 (625) filler for 625 and dissimilar joints, ENiFeCr-3 (inconel 82/182 family) for 800-family. Confirm the WPS for your application.
