Tantalum & Speciality Metals — Material Overview

Tantalum is the most corrosion-resistant engineering metal in common use: inert to hydrochloric and sulphuric acids at concentrations and temperatures that attack every stainless and nickel alloy. It is used as thin liners, heat-exchanger coils and repair patches that outlast the plant around them. Ta-2.5W adds strength for fasteners and springs; Ta-10W adds high-temperature strength for furnace parts.

Zirconium 702 is the acid-proof, HF-free chemical-plant metal — outstanding in acetic, sulphuric (up to ~70%) and urea service. Niobium behaves like a lighter, lower-cost tantalum in selected media and adds high-temperature and superconducting applications. The dense non-ferrous metals — bismuth, zinc and lead — cover shielding, ballast, cathodic-protection anode and acid-lining duties. All are supplied with full chemistry and traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use tantalum when it is so expensive?

Because in hot concentrated HCl and H₂SO₄ nothing else lasts. Tantalum is used as a thin (typically 0.5 – 1.5 mm) liner or coil on cheaper substrate — the metal cost is a fraction of the vessel, the plant stays running, and tantalum scrap retains high value at decommissioning.

Tantalum, Ta-2.5W or Ta-10W — how do I choose?

Pure tantalum for maximum corrosion resistance and ductility (liners, coils). Ta-2.5W where the part carries load — fasteners, springs, machined components — at essentially the same corrosion behaviour. Ta-10W for high-temperature strength above ~1500 °C.

How is tantalum installed and repaired?

It welds readily in clean inert-gas shielding. Iron contamination must be avoided — steel tooling marks embrittle tantalum — so handling, storage and welding practice matter. We supply material and guidance to the fabricator.

Zirconium 702 or 705?

702 is commercially pure and the better choice for the best corrosion resistance and welding behaviour; 705 (Zr-Nb alloy) gives higher strength for demanding pressure parts. For most acid service 702 is the specified grade.

Can niobium replace tantalum?

In many oxidising and moderate media, yes — niobium behaves similarly at lower cost and weight. In hot concentrated hydrochloric acid tantalum remains the only reliable choice. Tell us the medium, concentration and temperature and we will advise.
